Play Reviews

Reviews are of play scripts, written with a mind to how appropriate they are for performance at TheaterWorks Hartford.

Ripcord by David Lindsay-Abaire

I love that the two main characters of this show are bat-shit crazy little old ladies, because TheaterWorks has such a get repertoire of fitting actresses. Bring back Audrie Neenan! And Marilyn Sokol or Glynnis Bell or Debra Jo Rupp! Admittedly, there are four other actors needed for the show, and a whole scene that takes place skydiving (I hate anything for which I can come up with no better technical solution than projections), but we love a challenge, right? The haunted house scenery could be so much fun to make intentionally amatuerish. All in all the show is ridiculous (did I mention the skydiving?) and a bit cheesy (the two enemies grow to care for each other in the process of trying to make each other miserable, and, of course, a new baby fixes any broken familial relationship), but also fun. Both women are cleverly conniving, and the one's family are such chipper little sociopaths that I want to give them Minnesota accents and cast them in “Fargo.”
