Hillary and Clinton by Lucas Hnath
It is definitely an interesting idea to look at contemporary political figures the way that Shakespeare wrote about kings and emperors, which is to say, knowing no more than the general outlines of their stories. However, I wish that such a thing could be accomplished without feeling the need to explain the idea to the audience in the first few moments of the play. I think it would be far more interesting to follow the actors (who look and sound nothing like we expect) through the story until Hillary suggests the idea of the multiverse in which all things are possible, including her story in many subtle and not-so-subtle variations. Then the audience would be given the opportunity to have that “Ah-ha” moment of understanding at the end. This is especially important since, besides the concept, there is very little about the play that is interesting.
